La semaine africaine est célébrée tous les ans au Siège de l'UNESCO, pour coincider avec la journée mondiale de l'Afrique (25 mai), à l'initiative du Groupe africain et en coopération avec l'UNESCO/le Département Afrique. L'UNESCO apporte à la fois une contribution financière et sur le plan du contenu pour soutenir cet événement (tables-rondes, communication, visibilité, etc). La contribution financière couvre notamment les frais techniques, l'hospitalité, l'interprétation et la location des espaces utilisés.
