The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa will support the nine Southern African countries covered by the Regional Office, namely Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, in their efforts to ratify and implement the 1970 and 2001 Conventions to prevent and combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property and the pillage of underwater cultural heritage in the region. Furthermore, the Regional Office will support the nine Member States in facilitating the return and restitution of cultural property under the auspices of the 1970 Convention and the Intergovernmental Committee for Return and Restitution and in implementing the 2015 Recommendation on Museums and Collections.
