New Gourna is located in Luxor on the West Bank within the WH site of Ancient Thebes. Designed and built in 1946-52 by the famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy (1900-1989) to relocate the community of Old Gourna who had lived above the tombs in the ancient cemetery. The main characteristics of New Gourna Village is its reinterpretation of a traditional urban and architectural setting, the use of local materials and techniques, as well as its extraordinary sensitivity to climatic problems. The project aims at the rehabilitation the five main public buildings: Khan, Mosque/H. Fathy's house/market/theater and to valorize its relevance to contemporary sustainable architecture.
