Bangladesh's rich cultural heritage comprises archaeological sites dating back to the earliest phases of human settlement in Asia, including two cultural World Heritage Sites, the Monuments of the Historic Mosque City of Bagerhat and the Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur, both inscribed as World Heritage in 1985. Since inscription many programmes and interventions were undertaken, including an UNESCO International Safeguarding Campaign from 1985-2001. However, there is still an urgent need for technical capacity building and management training, as there is a lack of knowledge about and application of current practices for all stages of management (protection, conservation, presentation) and absence of on-site professional management and no monitoring.
