Following the significant damages caused by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks in Syria the UNESCO Beirut Office undertook a mission to Aleppo and Damascus to prepare the emergency response in the Culture and Education Sectors. As a result, UNESCO positioned as lead for the Culture Sector Chapter within the interagency Syria Earthquake Recovery Needs Assessment (SERNA)'and was identified as in important partner in the overall UN response for education. The purpose of this activity is to ensure the continued leadership of UNESCO in the domain of Culture and meaningful engagement in the domain of Education in the Syria emergency response.
