There are 17 Biosphere Reserves in Central America, including Trifinio-Fraternidad transboundary BR, shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. UNESCO Global Geopark Rio Coco in Nicaragua is the first one in the region. These territories are of vital ecological, geological and cultural importance, and are key to sustainable development. The local and indigenous communities living in these territories rely extensively on their ecosystem services such as water, tourism, natural resources and increase resilience of people to global challenges. This workplan will strengthen UNESCO sites in Central America, with a focus on sustainable development and Agenda 2030, building resilience, governance, inclusion, cooperation and contributing to biodiversity and climate action agendas.
