On the one hand the ocean acts as a carbon sink, it absorbs up to 30% of the annual emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere, resulting in increased ocean acidity levels compared to preindustrial times. This change in impacts biological processes. IOC is custodian agency for the SDG indicator 14.3.1 and strives to equip MS with the tools to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of ocean acidification. IOC also supports GOA-ON and its Ocean Decade Programme OARS. On the other hand, the ocean when disturbed can be a carbon source, therefore, IOC co-sponsors the Blue Carbon Initiative, which aims to raise awareness for and further investigate the importance of mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses, as possible nature-based solutions for climate change on the basis of latest scientific evidence.
