During this ceremony, Prof. Ana Maria Cetto, the 2023 laureate will receive the Prize and present their work.

The UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science is UNESCO’s oldest prize, created in 1951 following a donation from Mr Bijoyanand Patnaik, Founder and President of the Kalinga Foundation Trust in India. It is now also sponsored by the Foundation, the Government of India through the Department of Science and Technology, and the Government of Odisha State.

The Prize honours individuals, institutions or NGOs that have made a significant contribution to the popularization of science or technology and have helped interpret science and technology for the public, thus contributing to bridging the gap between science and society. This prize seeks to recognise the importance of effective science communication, demystifying complex ideas, fostering a sense of wonder and inspiring the public and the future generations of scientists.

The ceremony of the 2023 UNESCO Kalinga Prize is part of UNESCO’s celebration of the World Science Day for Peace and Development, following a high-level roundtable on “Building Trust in Science at the Nexus of Science, Policy and Society”.
