IICBA Training Guides

IICBA Training Guides are meant to provide guidance for practice for teachers, school leaders, ministry officials, or other educational leaders. Most training guides are meant for a regional or multi-country audience, but some focus on particular countries. Most training guides are externally peer reviewed. On this page you will find training guides that are formatted in a similar way as part of the new IICBA Training Guides Series created in 2023, as well as a selection of previous training guides.

Training Guide 2023-2: Regional Training Guide to Strengthen Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for Pre- and in-Service Teachers in Africa

Since 2020, IICBA has been partnering with the Regional Office for Southern Africa to build resilience and strengthen psychosocial support for Teachers and Teacher Educators in selected Sub-Saharan Africa countries. The project is anchored within the framing of UNESCO’s Africa program which focuses on “Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future” (O3). It has supported among others (i) an assessment of the psychosocial impacts on teachers of the COVID-19 pandemic; (ii) the development of a contextualized sub-regional strategy on strengthening mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) for teachers in Africa; and (iii) the development of an evidence-based psychosocial support manual, school-based training manual, and tools for teachers and Teacher educators; and (iv) pilot training for teachers, educators and education experts in four countries. This training guide relates to activity (iii) and provides guidance for teachers on MHPSS.

Training guide 2023-1: Teaching to Prevent Atrocity Crimes: A Guide for Teachers in Africa

This guide was prepared by UNESCO IICBA in partnership with a team at UNESCO HQ and the UN in New York. Teaching the history of atrocity crimes can build learners’ knowledge and skills, and can help to prevent violence by cultivating solidarity, knowledge and respect for other cultures and identities. Teachers require support in this task. This guide provides teachers with relevant subject and pedagogical knowledge to meet the challenges of teaching about atrocity crimes. This guide enables teachers in Africa to strengthen a culture of peace in their classrooms, schools and communities, through fostering their learners’ abilities to engage respectfully and responsibly in discussions about difficult or sensitive pasts. It aims to build teachers’ skills and confidence to teach about histories of atrocity while nurturing human rights values and behaviors.
