Tanzania hosts UNESCO-CFIT III annual project meeting

on higher technical education for an innovation workforce

From 13 to 15 June 2023, Tanzania hosted the CFIT III Annual Project Meeting in Dar es Salaam. The meeting was jointly organized by the UNESCO Headquarters CFIT III Project Team and the UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office, in close collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, bringing together more than 270 key stakeholders from the CFIT III Project, including Youth/Students, Higher Education Institutions, Employers, Government Officials and the Private Sector.

The main objective of this gathering was to foster engaging discussions and collaboration on effective initiatives geared towards enhancing youth skill development through higher technical education. By leveraging the collective expertise and insights of all participants, the meeting sought to pave the way for innovative strategies that can empower the youth and meet the evolving demands of the job market.

Representing Prof. Carolyne Nombo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST), Prof. William Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, presided over the UNESCO-CFIT III Project Annual Meeting on 13 June 2023. He conveyed the government's deep gratitude and appreciation to the Government of the People's Republic of China for their unwavering financial support to the United Republic of Tanzania. The Vice Chancellor recognized the profound significance of the CFIT III Project in shaping a promising future for African youth and the continent as a whole.

Mr. Michel Toto, UNESCO Head of Office and Representative in the United Republic of Tanzania, extended a warm welcome to all participants and expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government for their generous funding towards the transformation of Higher-Technical Education in Africa. He also acknowledged and appreciated the strong support and unwavering commitment of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, particularly the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, in advancing the goals of the CFIT III Project and promoting higher-technical education.

The Chinese Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Chen Mingjian, also attended the meeting and congratulated Tanzania on agreeing to host the CFIT III Annual Meeting. She reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting high-level skills development in Tanzania and Africa.

The implementation of the CFIT III Project in Tanzania commenced in February 2022, with the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) as the direct beneficiaries of the project. In the three-year project duration until December 2024, the outputs and outcomes of the project will focus on improving the quality and relevance of the curriculum, strengthening competency-based assessment methods, and increasing cooperation with the private sector to enhance the delivery of technical higher education.
