UNESCO and The Piano Man celebrate International Jazz Day

29/04/2022
03 - Good Health & Well Being

New Delhi, 29 April 2022: On the occasion of International Jazz Day (30 April 2022), UNESCO and The Piano Man will be hosting some of India’s finest musicians for a night full of harmony and togetherness.

There is no better music than Jazz to help us recover from two years of adversity. Jazz is secular, democratic and allows musicians the freedom to create and improvise. As a genre it has been wonderfully adapted to Indian musical traditions.

Eric Falt, Director of UNESCO New Delhi

There has never been a greater need to acknowledge all artists and their immense contribution to our social and cultural unity.

Arjun Sagar Gupta, musician and Founder of The Piano Man Group

The Jazz community in India has been growing exponentially over the last decade, both in terms of patrons and artists.  The Piano Man has been celebrating International Jazz Day with a special concert annually since 2016. This year, the concert at Piano Man Gurugram will feature sets by Sana Arora and Arjun Sagar Gupta on voice, and Yohei Saito on trombone, as well as Pradyumna Singh Manot on piano, Tamaghna Mukherjee on drums and Aditya Servaia on bass.

Another special celebration of International Jazz Day will also take place at The Piano Jazz Club in New Delhi.

In parallel, the day will be celebrated across India in a number of other cities, including Mumbai (The Bombay Jazz Club and Gigatainment), Bangalore (The Bangalore School of Music), and Goa (Jazz Goa).  To know more:  https://jazzday.com/events/

Since 2011, International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz - its roots, future, and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication.

As the great Nina Simone said, "Jazz is not just music, it is a way of life, it is a way of being, a way of thinking". The story of Jazz relates directly to the quest for human dignity, democracy and civil rights. It has given strength to the struggle against discrimination and racism. UNESCO believes in the power of Jazz as a force for peace, dialogue and mutual understanding and this is why in November 2011, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed 30 April as "International Jazz Day".
