Ecological Characteristics
The Biosphere Reserveis typical of the moraine landscape of the Central Russian Plain, consisting of southern-taiga forest and considerable areas of oligotrophic sphagnum bogs with elements of hypoarctic flora. Among the 51 mammal species are for example beaver Castor fiber, wolf Canis lupus and brown bear (Ursus arctos).
Socio-Economics Characteristics
More than 200 people live in the biosphere reserve (1998) who are either employed in a Nature Reserve administration or are subsistence farmers. Main economic activities in the buffer zone are berry and mushroom gathering, recreation activities by tourists (450 national tourists per year, 1998) and selective cuttings. In the transition area, agricultural activities and large clearcuts take place. Some environmental education and training activities (seminars, excursions, etc.) are carried out within the biosphere reserve.
