Developing and education sector response to early and unintended pregnancy. Discussion document for a global consultation
This publication is a conference ready version discussion paper prepared by UNESCO for the global consultation on education sector responses to early and unintended pregnancy (EUP) held in Johannesburg in November 2014.
The paper describes global and regional specificities of EUP, causes behind that, and implications for the education sector, highlighting the current status of the education sector response and mentioning few examples of ongoing programs and initiatives aimed at preventing EUP through Comprehensive Sexuality Education and ensuring the right to education for pregnant and parenting girls.
UNESCO’s Response to Ebola - Strategy Paper
This publication sets out possible areas of collaboration for UNESCO within a country-led response to Ebola.
UNESCO’s immediate goal is to strengthen the ability of countries to respond to, and withstand the Ebola crisis both in affected countries and beyond. UNESCO’s long term goal is to strengthen countries’ abilities to respond to this and/or similar public health emergencies in the future. As this is neither the first nor will it be the last health outbreak to threaten the ability of countries to provide basic services, UNESCO aims to support the development of sustainable systems and strengthen countries’ coping mechanisms to help them prepare for unforeseen eventualities.
Good Policy and Practice in Health Education – Booklet 9: Puberty Education & Menstrual Hygiene Management
The booklet lays out the context and rationale for education sector involvement, the characteristics of good quality puberty education and menstrual hygiene management, as well as key issues for programme development, implementation and sustainability. This booklet is intended for education sector policy-makers, planners and managers, school governing bodies, administrators, head teachers, teachers and other educators who are tackling some of the challenges to create healthy learning environments.

Good Policy and Practice in HIV and Health Education – Booklet 8: Education Sector Responses to Homophobic Bullying.
This booklet sets out the rationale for the education sector to address homophobic bullying, by providing an overview of the nature, extent and consequences of homophobic bullying in educational institutions. It provides a practical guide to possible action that can be taken which countries can adapt according to what is feasible in their specific context, and outlines strategies to prevent and address homophobic bullying in educational institutions, highlighting examples of good policy and practice as well as research findings, innovative interventions and lessons learned.

IDAHO Lesson Plan
Each year, the world celebrates the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) on May 17th. UNESCO and the IDAHO Committee propose teachers take advantage of the day to conduct an “IDAHO Lesson” so that they contribute to create safer learning environments, address discrimination and encourage respect and tolerance between and amongst learners. Four activities aimed at both primary and secondary level classes (two activities for each level) have been developed for use by teachers and facilitators.
The Lesson Plan is available in the following languages: English, French, German and Chinese.
It has also, in Thailand, been locally adapted in "Lesson Plans for teaching about sexual and gender diversity". This version is available in English and Thai.
Stopping Violence in Schools: A Guide for Teachers
This guide examines various forms of violence that take place in schools, and offers practical suggestions as to what teachers can do to prevent them. Ten action areas are proposed, each with specific examples that teachers can adapt to address and prevent violence. Excerpts from relevant international normative instruments as well as a list of links to online resources for stopping violence in schools are annexed at the end of the book.

The publications are based on a rigorous review of evidence on sexuality education programmes and are aimed at education and health sector decision-makers and professionals.
Volume I focuses on the rationale for sexuality education and provides sound technical advice on characteristics of effective programmes. A companion document (Volume II) focuses on the topics and learning objectives to be covered in a ‘basic minimum package’ on sexuality education for children and young people from 5 to 18+ years of age and includes a bibliography of useful resources.
