Fifteenth Session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) and Joint Session of the IBC and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC)

The Fifteenth (ordinary) Session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 28 and 29 October 2008.

It was followed by a Joint Session of IBC and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC), convened by the Director-General on 30 October and morning of 31 October 2008.

Two main topics will be discussed during these meetings: the principle of social responsibility and health as set forth in the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005) and the issue of human cloning and international governance. IBC also held a preliminary reflection on the principle of respect for human vulnerability and personal integrity.

On the basis of the preliminary results of its working groups discussed and examined on these occasions, IBC will revise, complete and finalize its work on these two issues, with a view to approval by the Committee of the final reports at the sixteenth session of IBC in 2009.
