Tuvalu - Home gardening: For better nutrition and money in my pocket!

The Niutao Youth Association and Tuvalu Youth Group aimed to educate young people on alternative income sources and to eat nutritious crops in order to reduce diabetes.

Who's involved?

Lead organisation: Niutao Youth Assocation, Tuvalu Youth Group, Funafuti, Tuvalu 

Other organisations: Ministry of Youth, Government of Tuvalu

Objectives: 

  • Raise awareness on the nutrition of food 
  • Raise awareness on the importance of the main three groups of foods
  • To practise and sustain a home garden

Activities:

  • Announce the project and select a minimum of 25 youth to take part in the home gardening project;
  • Purchase and distribute among the youth the necessary equipment for the home gardens: shovels, rakes, spades, wheelbarrows, water tanks, fencing wire, seed packets;
  • Hold a joint-workshop assisted by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Public Health for the youth on preparing and beginning a home garden and on nutrition;
  • Monitor the progress of the home gardens on a monthly basis;
  • Hold a short workshop with the youth 6 months after the project commences to review progress and share lessons learnt;
  • Investigate and report on ways of continuing the home gardening after the project;
