Multi-national workshop for unraveling the 1945 Makran Tusunmai event concluded in Islamabad

Islamabad - 18 June 2014: To enhance understanding of tsunami generation, propagation and inundation, a five day workshop held in Islamabad for unraveling the chain of events of the 1945 Makran Tsunami event from 26 May, 2014 till 30 May, 2014. The workshop was held with close coordination of UNESCO Islamabad Office, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and United States Geological Survey (USGS). Key aspect of the workshop was collection of the historical evidences and eye witness accounts of the 1945 Markran Tsunami in Pakistan, India, Iran and Oman by an international, Pakistani led team of experts. Read more...

Ziarat Juniper Forest declared Biosphere Reserve

Believed to be the second largest Juniper forest of its kind in the world, Juniper Forest of Ziarat in Balochistan- has been declared Biosphere Reserve by International Co-ordinating Council (ICC) of the Man and Biosphere (MAB)
Programme. Juniper tree species of Ziarat have a global significance because of their old age and slow growth rate. The species find their place in the list of the oldest living trees on earth. The MAB Programme promotes interdisciplinary research agenda and capacity building with an aim to highlight ecological, social and economic costs of biodiversity loss, and proposes ways to reduce it. The WNBR currently counts 610 biosphere reserves in 117 countries world-wide.

UNESCO Celebrates World Water Day 2013

Wah - 22 March 2013: On the occasion of World Water Day, UNESCO organized an event at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology with the theme of "Water Cooperation". The event was organized to
sensitize students about the importance of conservation and efficient use of water resources. UNESCO supports the introduction of Virtual Orientation Gallery in the website of Pakistan Museum of Natural History

UNESCO is supporting Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) to adopt new technologies for the enhanced experience of visitors to the Museum. The Virtual Orientation Gallery (VOG) is one of the achievements in this direction.
The VOG project is the latest addition to the website of Pakistan Museum of Natural History and is in line with the national priorities and the government's conservation strategies of Pakistan's biodiversity. VOG aims at providing an electronically based interactive information tool to students and general public on Pakistan's natural resources such as flora and fauna, minerals and fossils. VOG complements the existing information and awareness related activities and features of PMNH including dioramas in various galleries, film shows, posters, brochures, workshops, seminars and lectures.

A two days workshop on "Accuracy and Reliability of Flood Forecasting Models by Use of Remote Sensing Techniques", was jointly organized by the Pakistan Meteorological Department and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on
17-18 July, 2012 under the "Strategic Strengthening of Flood Warning & Management Capacity of Pakistan" project which is funded by the Government of Japan. International Training Workshop

After 2010 and 2011 floods in Pakistan all the stakeholders agreed that there is a need to review flood management procedures because in wake of global climatic changes we should update and synergies these procedures for loss minimization. In cooperation

World Science Day 2012 Celebrated in Pakistan

Islamabad - 14 November 2012: UNESCO celebrated the World Science Day 2012 at COMSTECH in the presence of eminent scientists, researchers, educationists, policy makers and students. An impressive event was organized with the theme "Science for Global Sustainability Interconnectedness, Collaboration, and Transformation", in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), and Pakistan Science Foundation.
