Germany has been a member of UNESCO since July 11, 1951.
The city of Hamburg is home to the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, whose aim is to facilitate access to education and improve the quality of learning all across the world. UNESCO's International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNEVOC) is also based in Germany, in Bonn.
Involved in all UNESCO fields of action, Germany actively contributes, for example, to UNESCO’s action against doping in sport and to the protection of cultural heritage in Afghanistan. Germany also has a large number of World Heritage sites and biosphere reserves.
