Organized by the Uited Nations, the event will bring together about 200 teachers at its New York headquarters with groups of ASPnet teachers participating from sites in countries in Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean that were affected bythe Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Practitioners and experts in research on the Transatlantic Slave Trade, in related curriculum development and teaching will share information and good practices during the videoconference. Innovative educational approaches and materials - many developed by ASPnet or the UNESCO Slave Route Project - can thus be taken to scale to increase the awareness of the causes and consequences of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and promote their inclusion in curricula by more schools.
This event is part of the week-long commemoration activities taking place at UN headquarters, among them an exhibition, a solemn commemorative ceremony of the General Assembly and a living legacy concert.
Since 1998, school-based activities on the remembrance of the slave trade and its abolition have been initiated in ASPnet classrooms around the world through the ASPnet Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) Education Project.
