Laurent Pauli

DesignationIBE Acting Director
IBE Acting Director 1968-1969

Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Laurent Pauli received his doctorate in Mathematics from the Polytechnic of Zurich in 1933. He wrote a programme called “modern math.” With this new programme and new pedagogy, Pauli developed a course on the psycho-pedagogy of mathematics which he initially professed at the teacher training school in Neuchâtel. This work caught the attention of Jean Piaget who was delighted that this pedagogy took into account his psychological and epistemological constructivism. Piaget invited Pauli to Geneva to become the co-director of the International Bureau of Education. In 1968, Laurent Pauli assumed the role of IBE Director.
