Ensuring inclusion and equity in education in the Asia-Pacific
Throughout the world, despite encouraging progress in school enrollment, individuals still face the inclusion-exclusion dichotomy across physical, social, psychological and systematic dimensions. Wealth, language of instruction and disability, disparities by gender and ethnicity, migration background, gender and sexual identity, and other factors, as well as the intersections between them, remain significant barriers to accessing and fully participating in education globally including in the Asia-Pacific.
Classrooms are made up of diverse students. However, schools and teachers are not necessarily equipped to provide equitable and quality education to all of these students. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified the challenges faced by children who are already experiencing vulnerable situations.
In this context, UNESCO Bangkok and the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) are organizing the annual 2020 UNESCO-KEDI Asia-Pacific Regional Policy Seminar on 12 and 13 November 2020 from 14.00 to 16.00 Thailand time via videoconferencing on Zoom. The theme of this year’s seminar is “Ensuring Inclusion and Equity in Education” to build on the momentum created by the 2020 Global Education Monitoring Report “Inclusion and Education: All Means All”.
The seminar will call attention to the educational needs of the vulnerable and marginalized people, whose already precarious conditions have been further exacerbated by COVID-19. In recognition of different layers of discrimination and compounding challenges to ensuring inclusion and equity in education, it will touch upon progress made so far, barriers to overcome, and promising practices from the perspective of policy-makers, researchers, practitioners, educators, youth representatives and many others.
