Sangdong Library in Bucheon, UNESCO Creative City of Literature, has opened a special exhibition room featuring 10,000 books from Okinawa, the Japanese archipelago. The Okinawa corner is the only resource of its kind in the Republic of Korea to learn about Okinawan society, history and culture.

The Okinawa corner project was led by professors from the Seoul National University and the Chonbuk National University. On 14 September, an international academic conference on Okinawan literature was hold in Sangdong Library. Stakeholders from Bucheon and Okinawa discussed how to cooperate with each other through the medium of literature, notably reading culture. In return, Okinawa’s prefectural public library offered to create a dedicated corner to promote Bucheon in its new library.

Through the Okinawa corner initiative, Bucheon aimed to support shared cultures and peace research. The Creative City, together with Okinawa, will continue to exchange a variety of information on their respective literary sector to improve reading culture.
