Recent world events and the COVID-19 pandemic have eroded trust in the media in general, fuelled by the circulation of false content rapidly spreading - particularly on social media. However, studies show that many citizens still ascribe greater confidence to radio that to any other media. This confidence level reinforces the importance of providing people with accurate and reliable news content. Citizens expect verifiable and independent information, which is shared in the public interest, holds the powerful to account and helps society build a better future for all.
UNESCO therefore calls on radio stations worldwide to celebrate World Radio Day this 13 February under the theme “Radio and Trust”. Let’s rejoice in the loyal confidence of listeners in radio, and radio stations’ success in remaining credible in the surrounding cacophonies.

World Radio Day is a day devoted to radio stations and their listeners. It was proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and raised to International Day of interest to all by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
