Dear readers,
While the COVID-19 pandemic persists and education and training systems are yet to return to normality, there has been a collective reimagining of the future of technical and vocational education and training. TVET institutions have been engaging in peer learning and knowledge exchange to ensure the lessons learned from the pandemic are integrated into long-term planning, thereby strengthening their adaptability and resilience to future disruptions.
At the same time, school and workplace closures have led to extensive learning and training losses, disproportionately affecting young people aged 15-24. Major life-cycle transitions such as graduations and labour market entry are being delayed. Young women, youth living with disabilities, youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those in informal or self-employment are confronting the greatest challenges. Moving forward, economic recovery plans need to guarantee funding for skills development and provide relevant programmes for young people training for or employed in the most severely impacted sectors.
Reimagining youth skills post-pandemic is at the core of this year’s message for World Youth Skills Day. On 15 July, the Permanent Missions of Portugal and Sri Lanka to the United Nations, together with UNESCO, ILO and the Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth, are organizing a virtual event to share insights on the skills that are needed to help young people navigate the era of COVID-19 and beyond. We invite all TVET stakeholders to join the discussion and we encourage young people to share their views on work and skills training in the post-pandemic era as part of our World Youth Skills Day video campaign.
Best wishes from the UNESCO-UNEVOC team
