Ecole Caminando

A classroom in nature? To prepare autonomous, responsible future citizens, the Caminando school, located in the countryside, uses nature and the living world as a teaching tool.

Children are disconnected from life and nature! For a societal transition, they need to understand and experiment the interdependence of all living beings. Caminando is a nature-based elementary school founded in 2013 in France. Managed by Muriel Fifils, a former French teacher, it is part of the École de la Nature et des Savoirs, founded by geographer Éric Julien. It implements the official programs of the French Ministry of Education, using nature and the living world as teaching support.

Teaching is structured around a project-based approach. Children are involved in their own learning, according to their own rhythms and talents. They discover the interdependence of all beings through experimentation, verbalization, learning and celebration.

Learning to take care of our environment

Located in the Diois biovalleys in the Drôme area (France), the school is self-managed and cared for by the students themselves. Preservation of biodiversity, market gardening, upkeep of the premises, school life, intergenerational transmission... They are involved in the school's day-to-day activities and are learning the basics of community life.

The school has around thirty children aged 6 to 11. They continue their education at secondary school, strengthened by successful projects, with values of cooperation and a determination to care for the environment.

The Caminando school hopes to expand further and develop training courses for educational stakeholders.
