UN Dispute Tribunal

Basic Citation Rules

Parties appearing before the Dispute Tribunal should ensure that their submissions include correct references to relevant legal instruments and authorities, including judgments. When referring to the judgments or orders of the Tribunal, parties are expected to follow the following basic citation rules.

Judgments of the Dispute Tribunal

A full citation includes the applicant's last name (italicized) and the Dispute Tribunal's judgment number.

  • For example: Smith UNDT/2011/001.
Orders of the Dispute Tribunal

A full citation includes the applicant's last name (italicized) and order number, identifying in parentheses the registry ("GVA" for Geneva, "NY" for New York and "NBI" for Nairobi) and the year the order was issued.

  • For example: Smith Order No. 1 (NBI/2011).
Cases generally

When referring to the case law of the Dispute Tribunal, include citations to the Tribunal's judgments and orders. If no judgment or order is available, it is permissible to refer to the case number, followed by a parenthetical with the applicant's last name.

  • For example: Case No. UNDT/GVA/2011/001 (Smith).
